Simone Noronha — Freelance
Simone is an editorial illustrator and art director based in New York. She’s worked with The New York Times, WIRED, …
I have been drawing since I was very young. I always noticed it as a game, a moment without rules, or structures, a place where everything was worth
During high school I learned a lot about art, applied to different fields, it was a beautiful experience, which only confirmed that my true north was here.
The architecture degree gave me many tools and knowledge, which despite not dedicating to traditional architecture, naturally overturn to illustration: visual structure, colour, composition, synthesis, clarity are some aspects that, every day, I link when starting an illustration project.
Further, until the present day, I live this process as something therapeutic, something organic and necessary, as a way to relax, an act of meditation a find with me, a way to continue knowing myself through a blank page.
Currently, I am in an interesting transition, I have left my full-time job in a company to be able to dedicate more time to my profession as an illustrator, so there is no typical day.
I can say that I am a person who gets up early to work. There is always some soft background music that makes me feel special. A fundamental requirement to be able to create and inspire me is the order; I need to work in a calm and orderly place. I also like that in the work and inspiration spaces there are flowers. At night I also find a lot of inspiration, there is a very interesting stillness where I can better interpret ideas.
There is always a root of inspiration linked to introspection and emotionality, but it is very broad. I could also tell you from nature, the city and its vibe inspire me a lot. Fashion, some talk or reflection. In fact, I think I can find inspiration in every situation because since I was a child I was very perceptive and sensitive.
Pablo Amargo's designs are always a guide for me, everything he does is impeccable.
Also the Juarez Casanova studio I love the way they interpret the synthesis on each concept.
Some projects where I received recognition from important entities, such as the United Nations or the Inter-American Development Bank, undoubtedly make me feel proud.
Today I could say that the poster for the 82. Hahnenkamm Rennen 2022 in Kitzbuhel in Austria, was a beautiful recognition, of which I am most proud.
Today there is a great personal challenge in making my work known more and more, continuing to learn, and growing in the world of illustration, and being involved in challenging projects.
It would be more a suggestion instead of advice, try to draw every single day no matter how small, share useful information with colleagues, entrust in your work, create personal projects and be very curious, participate in contests you can, these are some things that helped me a lot.
